Being the resident speed-head drag racer here at
2Wheel Tuner, I have spent the last three years of my life tuning and
riding the quickest Suzuki motorcycle on the planet, always trying
desperately to scrub every last thousandth-of-a-second off of my
quarter-mile times. I have tested, destroyed and thrown away more
components than most riders will ever install on their bikes and have a
fairly good grasp on what works and what is just another gimmick in the
industry.
So, when the big brown delivery truck arrived a
few weeks ago to deliver the latest product from MSD Ignitions, I
jumped out of my chair to meet the driver at the front door to see what
delicious goodies he brought for our 2003 GSX-R 1000 test bike.
Inside the box was a new adaptation to an old idea
in drag racing, a 2-step, universal low-launch limiter for motorcycles,
quads, snowmobiles and watercraft.
For those of you that have never stepped on a drag
strip or settled a side-bet with a buddy on a deserted road, you
probably haven’t heard of a 2-step launch limiter and don’t know how it
works or what the benefits are.
Without going into too many technical details, the basic
idea of this unit is the ability to limit (hold) a steady rpm without
having to watch the tachometer; simply pull the clutch in, roll the
throttle open and the motor will hold steady at a predetermined rpm
(adjustable from 1,800 to 9,900 rpm in 100 rpm increments). To do this,
the MSD Launch Master/Launch Limiter plugs into the stock wiring loom
at the ignition coils, intermittently misfiring each of the cylinders
and holding the motor steady at your designated rpm.
What does this mean to you? More consistent
launches, quicker 60-foot times and the ability to be a parking lot
pimp by not hanging your motor on the rev-limiter (at 13,000 RPM) to
get the same attention-grabbing bbbrrrraaaaaaaappppp sound. Simply pull
the clutch in, roll the throttle wide open and watch the RPM of the
motor hover at whatever setting you put into the MSD Limiter. Pretty
damn cool!
